Skate decks
Back in the 1970s, pro skater Larry Stevenson invented
the kicktail, a skateboard-modification that allowed riders the ability
to perform jump tricks. By raising the tail, riders could gain enough
momentum to jump forward and lift their skate decks in the air to perform
air tricks.
How does one perform an ollie on a skate deck?
• Stand with your hind foot planted on the kicktail – your
other foot should remain near the middle of the board.
• Crouch down and simultaneously press on the kick tail and jump
forward, sliding your front foot up the deck.
• Your shoe should catch the grip tape and bring the board in
the air with you.
• Land with your feet over the trucks of the skateboard.
Before the invention of the kicktail, skateboard decks were flat and mainly
used for transportation and surf-practice during the off season. In
modern skating, ollies are the most basic skate-trick; after mastering
the ollie, the rider can move on to more difficult tricks like kick-flips
and heel-flips.
